Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. Figured I couldn't. I remember reading once about how you should have a "board of advisors" table for your life and each seat represents a different element that you value. Then you fill in each seat with a person. That way you have all your bases covered and many people with whom to lean on when needed.

Thanks for writing about this! My experience is similar--no single mentor, many sources of inspiration. When we talk about having A mentor as though it's a mandatory piece of the work experience, we do a disservice to those who then diligently search for one but cannot find one. They may feel as though they are lacking somehow. Being open to inspiration from multiple sources gives us all access to it.

Thanks for the reply! I agree it should largely be static, but I think revisiting it (as necessary) would make sense as well.

Good questions, couple thoughts...

The equation should be from the point of view of here and now, because the idealistic goal is everyone will put in the same amount of everything eventually...But when that will happen is an unknown, the only thing that is known is what you all are bringing to the table right here and now.

The equation is intended to be locked in stone from the time you create it....BUUUUUT with all things, everything is negotiable and this too can change. It changed for us several times with Swift Kick / Red Rover. But each time it changed, it was in relation to some big event (new partner, shifting roles, partner leaving). It is during those times that we'd revisit the equity conversation.
Make sense?

Tom, thanks for sharing this. I have been thinking a lot about starting a small business in the next couple of years. I love reading through your blog and learning more.

Would this formula be stagnant? or fluid? You mention this should be done early. With the metrics you use (especially unpaid time, but the others as well), situations change.

The quote is from Ira Glass. The reason it reminds you of your previous post is because it's from the video on that post, "Ira Glass on Storytelling."

Who needs a spoon when you can use your hand...

Who needs a hand when you can just lick it out of the jar directly...

Who needs a mouth when you can just inject it into your blood stream...
